Making Hard Decisions.

When a marriage reaches a breaking point, the decision to divorce is deeply personal — one only you can make. While many may offer support, and an attorney can explain the legal and financial implications, the choice ultimately rests with you.

Even if you know your marriage cannot continue, it’s common to feel hesitant and concerned about the future— especially if you’re unsure about the legal process. That’s why working with an experienced Tulsa divorce attorney is so important. At Brookside Legal, attorney Curtis J. Roberts provides clear guidance and strong advocacy at every stage, helping you protect your rights and your future.

Understanding the Oklahoma Divorce Process

  • Step 1

    Filing the Petition

The process begins when one spouse files a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. This document outlines requests for property division, alimony (spousal support), and, if applicable, child custody and child support.

  • Step 2

    Temporary Arrangements

While the divorce is pending, the parties decide who will stay in the marital home, how bills will be paid, and — if children are involved — temporary custody, visitation, and child support. If the parties cannot agree, the court will decide after a Temporary Order Hearing.

  • Step 3

    Discovery

Both sides exchange important information, usually financial, in a process called discovery. This ensures each party has the details needed to negotiate a fair settlement or prepare for trial.e? Better descriptions result in more sales.

  • Step 4

    Mediation

Most Oklahoma divorce cases involve mediation — a confidential negotiation led by a neutral mediator, often a family law attorney. The mediator works with both parties and their lawyers to reach an agreement. If successful, the terms are written into a Decree of Dissolution of Marriage, which finalizes the divorce.

  • Step 5

    Trial

If mediation fails, the case proceeds to trial. The judge will hear evidence, make decisions on all unresolved issues, and issue a ruling. This ruling becomes part of the final divorce decree.
